I don't share this secret anymore, but when I WAS in that position, I told the person how I felt. It may have been selfish, but at least I knew a definitive answer (it was "no"). Besides, once the feelings are out, they don't seem nearly as scary or weighty, thus they become much easier to overcome.
I'm going to try in a few months and share my feelings (let them get over their ex...)
